  • Does the new iMac stop rendering when it goes into Sleep Mode?

Posted by Ned Miller on March 14, 2013 at 11:38 pm

Something weird is happening. I just bought the new 27″ iMac and I am using FCP7. I do an export in QT Conversion, it says it will take awhile, perhaps an hour. I leave and when I come back very little progress has occurred. I believe it is because the computer went to sleep? I theorize that because when I wake it up the render goes really fast.

So, unlike my old tower, does the new iMac stop the FCP export just because there’s no activity with the keyboard and mouse?

    Thanks,

I’ve been having that problem with AE. But with older iMac that it didn’t ever happen on before. Could be a 10.8.2 bug more likely.

For edit systems I never let the computer sleep. The display can sleep, but we leave the computer running and on 24/7. We don’t even let the hard drives spin down.

Go to your System Preferences/Energy Saver/

    Computer Sleep: Set to Never

Display Sleep: 30 min. to 1 HR.

Make sure “Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible” is UNCHECKED.

I’m on a 27″ iMac 5K running Sierra. I set AE to do a 6-hour-ish render yesterday, and this morning, 15 hours later, it had not finished. It seems that the computer went to sleep, because the render continued quickly when I woke the computer up this morning. But I can’t figure out why it went to sleep.

I couldn’t find the setting “Computer Sleep” so that I could set it to “Never”. Here are my settings:
