  • Does the Decklink HD Extreme work in an external chassis? Mac use…

    Hi

I’ve just got the new MacPro and my old one had the DeckLink HD Extreme internal card. It’s two pci slots worth

As I didn’t buy this so long ago and it’s an expensive and great bit of kit I’d like to use it on my new Pro. However, obviously the new tower doesn’t have any pci slots.

This leaves me needing to put it in an external chassis.

I’ve search the net but can’t find anything helpful

Does anyone on here know if the Blackmagic Design DeckLink HD Extreme will work in an external chassis for mac?

If so any thoughts on what one I should be looking at?

If it matters, I’m UK based

    Thanks

The only external thunderbolt chassis that supports PCIe cards I’ve seen is the Sonnet Echo Express line. They do appear to have updated their line to support thunderbolt 2, so they should work with your new MacPro tower.

    Hi

    Thanks thats very helpful.

Do you know if I can link an external chassis with the BlackMagic card in it via USB or FireWire at all?

The Blackmagic card I’m using is about 3-4 years old btw it’s not the latest model

    Thanks again

USB and Firewire don’t have enough bandwidth to support the uncompressed video that a PCIe card puts out. Thunderbolt is really the only way to go on a Mac

You may want to check out the Netstor NA211TB Thunderbolt 2 external enclosure.
I have ordered one but have not received it yet, but if it performs as well as their Thunderbolt raid enclosure I think I will be happy with it as I have two of them.
