  • Does someone have a Wedding Video Shot List/Idea list available?

Posted by David Rodney on January 26, 2006 at 1:40 pm

    Hi all,

After a long hiatus, and years of shooting news and commercials for tv, I am returning to the world of Wedding Video Production, just to enhance my income a little. I have to admit I am a little aprehensive.

I have done some research to see what is being produced locally, and I must say there is still some rubbish being produced!

Effect after effect, horrible camera work, etc etc…but the bride and groom still pay good money and are still relatively satisfied.

What I want to do is something a little different – perhaps something more of a documentary, or Television style production. So it looks like something produced for television and not by a back-yarder trying to impress by covering bad camera work with digital effects.

I admit I am lacking a little creative juice and so would appreciate if someone had a shot list available that gave me an idea, a point at which to start if you like.

No, I don’t need a list of the usual shots – I know all of those. Perhaps I am after a “theme” or an “angle” to take when about to take the plunge into my first production.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, by the way, I am a “back-yarder” myself – I now have my office set up at home after years of owning a shop front…much cheaper…and so I hope I didn’t offend any other pro back-yarders out there!

    Thanks!

Search archives here and google for “wedding stories”.

There’s a cable series called “A Wedding Story” that created quite a craze the last couple years, brides seem to go ga-ga for it… now many high-end producers are raking in the bucks imitating or further developing this more “documentarian” approach. It’s much more time-intensive than straight wedding shooting, you are going to have to shoot a lot of location interviews and b-roll and panned stills and etc. to describe the entire relationship from before first meeting to the day of the ceremony. So expect a prolonged edit.

For it is they who have written the definitive guide to getting all the shots. I think it’s in the archives here

Modest? Not I. The link is: https://www.creativecow.net/articles/graham_doug/wedding_list/index.html

David and I also have an ongoing series in EventDV magazine which deals with the topic in more depth.
