Does preview quality = export quality?
Posted by Christopher Nunn on June 2, 2008 at 12:57 pmHi there, I’m interested to know whether preview quality in FCP (when fully rendered with Safe RT mode set) is the same as exported quicktime quality (in the same format as the original timeline footage) or is there a difference between the two? I’m assuming FCP utilises QuickTime for preview and that the two should be the same but I wanted to double check that there wasn’t another technical issue I should bare in mind here.
Many thanks,

You have asked a lot of questions recently regarding rendering, quality and system performance. The time it has taken you to post to this forum, you could have opened up your help file under FCP and find all your answers there.
Sorry to post another Read the Manual answer.
Your timeline will need to be completely rendered at full quality for export.

June 2, 2008 at 2:18 pmIf you open a clip in FCP, in the Viewer or Canvas, and open the same clip in QT and view them side by side, they will look different. The one open in QT will be brighter…there will be a GAMMA shift. This is due to the way they display their gamma. In FCP they display with the idea of a Gamma of 2.2…TV gamma…although it is still a low res proxie. The one in QT displays with a gamma of 1.8…computer screen gamma. (I think I am remembering this all right).
If you want to see what your footage really looks like on a TV, then you need to view it on a TV. If you really want to see what it will look like on a computer screen…well…don’t know what to say. The Gamma displayed in FCP is not the computer gamma, and there is no way to change it.

June 2, 2008 at 6:31 pmThank goodness for the Bar Mitzvah season coming to an end. Do you know anyone else shooting Bar Mitzvahs with HPX-500?
Soon I’ll have time to read the manuals for CS3!

You know Steve, it’s actually likely that here in L.A. a guy could successfully advertise that he is the most expensive producer of Bar Mitzvahs in the city, and that would probably sell… Pretty disgusting huh?
