  • Does PP CS4 really not have a “take” column in project bins?

So we’re getting our work flow down to the point where we’re complaining about nit-picky things (woo-hoo!).

We shot RED footage with external multi-tracked audio. We’re syncing in Final Cut, exporting via XML and importing into Premiere Pro CS4.1 (so we can access the native RED files in the edit).

    Everything is going pretty smoothly.

A pet peeve I’m encountering is that in Final Cut (and other Mac only RED metadata programs), there are separate columns for “scene” and “shot.” Premiere, as far as I can tell, only has a “scene” column, so I’m having to go back in and add the “take” for every clip.

Is there a way to get a “take” or “shot” column to show up in the PP project bin?

It sure would be nice if all that tasty RED metadata was actually available to Premiere users in the Project window. I know you can open a “metadata window,” but it doesn’t really do me any good to have to click on a clip in the Project Bin window, and then open the metadata window just to see what take it is.

“Comment” would be another nice column to see, as “log note” is taken up by RED’s autogenerated “as shot” or camera preset settings, and it would be great to be able to have to fields for comments and descriptions.

I could care less about video duration, media duration, etc., columns. I want to know what take the clip is, and I’d love to be able to make notes (separate from shot descriptions).

It always seems like such a futile effort.

PPro has lots of columns that don’t show in the default configuration…

You can make a column if you want something that isn’t there. Don’t have PPro in front of me, but if you use the fly-out menu in the upper right of the project panel and select Metadata display…once you’re in there, you can also create a custom property if you’d like.

I think at the moment that Adobe has the crown for sheer amount of metadata recognized…it’s much more than most people even want to deal with.

Well what do you know! That’s exactly what I was looking for (and just submitted a request to Adobe for).

PERFECT. Don’t know how I missed it.

I was able to deselect all the columns I didn’t want to see (video duration, etc.) and select the ones I did (shot, comment, etc.).

    Thanks, Tim.
