  • Does onboard Firewire count as OHCI?

I’m a longtime Canopus user who has had to dump my Storm2 in order to upgrade to this newest version of Premiere. I’m having a hard time sorting out the external monitor usage though… I have a Dell Precision 650, and I’m using the built-in firewire connectors to connect to my DV deck, then out to the speakers and monitor. I’m having spotty performance problems with it though, sometimes I open Premiere and I get no output at all, sometimes it stutters, sometimes it looks like I’m only getting one field per frame, sometimes it’s beautiful. I’ve tried it with Premiere set to display desktop video, and without.

Does the onboard firewire count as OHCI, like Premiere requires, or do I need to add an OHCI PCI card? Other than that my computer far exceeds the minimum system requirements. Any other ideas that I should look at would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Brent

    Hi,

Here’s what i found. you can always talk to dell support.

1394 quickly gained a reputation for poor interoperability. The IEEE addressed this issue with a 1998 update dubbed 1394a, which tightened up the spec and improved performance. Interoperability was further enhanced by the 1394 Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) specification, which defined standard ways for 1394 hardware to interact with host operating systems. Today, compatibility problems are rare among OHCI-compliant 1394 devices, and the interface is becoming more common in mainstream PCs. This is especially true in systems designed for multimedia applications. For more detailed information on 1394 technology, particularly for use in multimedia applications, see our story “FireWire–the Consumer Electronics Connection”. https://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,33848,00.asp

You’ll probably have to call dell support and/or enter your service tag number to get your specs. Also look at your Dell shipper.
