  • Does MAC PRO (Universal) work with these FCP Plugins?

Posted by Dale Hildebrand on August 28, 2006 at 1:09 pm

Need to get a new computer for my upcoming project. So either want to get a G5 quad or Mac Pro- not sure which. The reason for the debate is that I really don’t want to upgrade all my plugins at this point and would hate for some of them to become disfunctional. Don’t care if some don’t have the speed of universal binary but just want to make sure they work (I.E. photoshop – hear it still works but does not have the speed)). I’ve been searching all over, but no one has difinitively said “this plugin works and that one doesn’t”.

So here are the plugins I’d like to know if they work on Mac Pro, Intel, Universal binary:

    Eureka
    Boris Continuum Complete
    CGM
    CHV
    DFT 55mm
    Grain Surgery 2
    Nattress (heard these work)
    Joe’s Filters
    Knoll Light Factory
    Feildskit / twixtor
    Synthetic Aperture

Also, as I migrate to HD – does anyone know which onces work with HD and which don’t?

Have you checked the websites of each of these plug-ins? I’m sure everything you need to know is in the Support section of each of these companies. If you don’t see the information listed, send them an email to support.

I asked the same question a while back, have pretty much the same plugins as you.

Nattress and Joe’s work for certain, as should CHV and CGM.

I actually saw that thread Chris – thank you. Though was wondering how much that is applicable to 5.1 and how much is applicable to Intel Mac???

Walter – yes, I have been looking at a number of software sites, but was wondering if anyone hyas tested the plugins in the “real world” on an intel mac. Many have upgrade options, yet many don’t specify the current plugins do work – just not as excelerated.

Graeme – Thanks for the update on those additional softwares.

I was told from Boris that we needed to wait on a upgrade for Red and Contiuum.

I’m using a MacBook Pro and I re-installed all my plugins.
Boris also told me that we have to wait for a Continuum upgrade, but I thought some people here mentioned getting it to work. I haven’t had any luck there.
I’ve seen Nattress working on a friend’s MacBook Pro.
Due to circumtances beyond my control I had to upgrade in the middle of a project. Joe’s was MOSTLY working for me, but unfortunately my favorite effect, Joe’s Color Glow, would either (based on its settings) severely whiten the clip or turn the clip into a full screen of white. I had to go clip by clip to replace each one with a Stib’s glow.

You can force the 5.1 universal to open using Rosetta and your plugins come back. Use get info on the actual application icon and choose OPEN USING ROSETTA.

    It’s slower…

All of our plugins that work within FCP (including Twixtor and FieldsKit) work natively on intel Macs.

(make sure to read the caveat about using projects on Intel Macs that were authored on PPC Macs: https://www.revisionfx.com/generalfaqsFCP.htm )

I just loaded the FCP 5.1.1. on Mac Pro and thought I give our old PPC Plugins a shot. After dumping the PPC FCP Plugins to the folder, I started FCP. To my surprise, they are all there and working!!!

I did NOT load Final Cut in Rosetta (Get Info/Open in Rosetta) yet they still show up and all working! I wonder if the system kicked FCP in Rosetta automatically or is it running in Intel Mode? And whether or not using them will slow FCP down compare to not having them installed.

Anyone else tried or experienced this?

    Thanks
