Does compressor have trouble with crossfades?
Posted by Michael Allen on October 9, 2006 at 4:01 pmCrossfades look good in timeline but bad after compressor. Not all crossfades are bad but many are a little pixelated for lack of a better term. Using best quality 90 min. setting preset.

I also noticed this issue in the latest Compressor update. I think its a 2-pass VBR thing. I’m doing another pass today and will switch the preset to CBR. You might want to try that too.

October 9, 2006 at 5:24 pmHow are you exporting? Are you using EXPORT>COMPRESSOR right in Final Cut or are you exporting a Quicktime file and dragging that into Compressor?
Try that first option if you’re not already.

I thought that the broken VBR thing was supposed to be fixed in v.2.1. I know that Compressor 2.0 has problems with the VBR setting, resulting in pixelated cross dissolves and fades. That’s why I bought Bitvice when I need to encode with VBR. FWIW, the CBR results in both Compressor and Bitvice look pretty much the same, with Compressor working quite a bit faster.

Actually, I noticed this issue after I encoded right from the timeline. So, what does that tell you??? It seems to me Apple may well have taken one step forward and then five steps back…

October 9, 2006 at 8:31 pmWhat I did, and I did this back in compressor 1.5 is
go into the encode area (in the preset you use) then to GOP
and set this (group of pictures) to low, like 7.
What this does is compress on a less number of
frames at a time for a much better result.
This is typically done when compression artists customize a
compression job. So you lose some space this way
since you are doing it for the entire encode.
All this does is increase the file size a bit.
This is not a problem if your show is 30 or 60 minutes.
and not an issue at all a 1 or 2 minute sequences.Try it to see what you think.

October 9, 2006 at 11:09 pmI have done multiple 2 pass VBR encodes (after the 5.1.2 update) and all is well. My method is to render everything (including full rt effects) and then export a reference movie and drop that into compressor.
