  • Does Compressor Actually Work ?

Posted by Adam Duplay on March 7, 2006 at 7:17 pm

    Hello,

I have cross posted this in the DVDSP forum.

After a search of this forum, and reading several very long posts about people having a similar problem as me, there still seems to be no clear solution.

Compressor Crashes almost every time I use it and takes the whole system down with it. Occassionally, however, it simply freezes and never finishes the encode.

I have tried almost every combination.. export from FCP using compressor, export ref movie, trashed Compressor 1 settings, trash prefs, create custom setting, etc…

    Anything?

I use compressor many times a week with no trouble.

Tell us what you do after you export.
What do you do in compressor to finish your set up?
What are you asking it to do?
Where are you asking it to put the finished file?
How much memory does your computer have?
How much room do you have on the drive you are
    asking compressor to save to?
    What OS are you on?
What version of FCP Studio/Compressor are you on?

Compressor works for thousands of people.
FCP/Compressor is very prevalent in all kinds of levels of
production. That’s not to say people like yourself don’t
have issues. But I haven’t seen one yet that couldn’t be
resolved by going through each step and seeing what
    the person was doing.

I had problems with DVDSP when I first got it. It basically wouldn’t run or function. Numerous calls to apple, other users, etc. could not fix the problem. In the end, I reinstalled my os and my software. In the end, had I done that in the first place it would have been quicker than the days and hours of calls I was making. Reinstalling was basically a couple hours worth of time.

I know it’s a pain, but something somewehre is corrupt and you’re most likely never going to figure it out. You might want to consider reinstalling the OS and apps. BACKUP EVERYTHING to another drive with carbon copy cloner first.

Bret, you may be right. And I’m certainly not above reinstalling my OS, but probably not while I have two nearly finished feature length docs on the box – so I was hoping to find a solution.

My specs are listed above. Media is on a 4way striped RAID 0. Both the RAID and the boot disk have pleanty of headroom.

I have completed several FCP to DVDSP projects previously with no problems, but not since upgrading to Studio 5.

And just to prove that I am not alone in this problem…

Using Compressor on four systems here with no crashes here. Sounds like some conflicts on your system.

    Adam,

Are you sending your output file from compressor to your media drives (RAID) ?
Have you tried sending the file to someplace other than
your media RAID, like maybe a second drive in your G5?

I have tried to output to the boot drive as well, with the same failed results.
