Does Changing Field Dominance to “None” Deinterlace?
Hello all,
I’m shooting HDV 1080i60 NTSC (at 29.97fps of course)My normal workflow is to convert to pro res, but leave frame size, rate and temporal settings alone (1440×1080, 29.97fps and Upper Field dominant).
Upon output to standard definition DVD (by outputting a reference movie from the timeline and then bringing that to compressor), I deinterlace using frame controls as I have found that a progressive DVD yields great looking footage and titles across the most varied types of screens (Standard TV’s and Flatscreen progressives).
My question is, when editing my 1080 interlaced material (upper field dominant), will changing the “Field Dominance” pulldown to “None” in the sequence settings effectively deinterlace this matterial? (and thus making it so I don’t have extend my output time in compressor using the frame controls deinterlace there).
I see that setting it to none makes it display “progressive” as my titles now appear as solid graphics, rather than with the usual interlace artifacts, but will a reference output of this then truely be progressive? Will I be bringing a true progressive file to Compressor and output a progressive mpeg2 without setting the deinterlace in frame controls?
If it is indeed made progressive by selecting none, then what are the benefits of deinterlacing with compressor?Thanks so much for your time.

Given your source material is interlaced, you would be better off doing the deinterlace as you have been. Personally, I prefer to use third party plugins to deinterlace before final render so I can see the effect and tweak the deinterlacing shot by shot if necessary.
Just changing the sequence settings, even if it then rendered everything as deinterlaced, would be using the FCP deinterlace which is not the best. Compressor is better than FCP and many think that third party deinterlacers are better again.

yes, setting fields to “none” does do a de-interlace of sorts,
but it is probably the worst quality de-interlace you can get!i did a test a while back as i was looking for a quick-fix way to de-interlace my whole show,
INCLUDING the titles, and motion effects.
no surprise, but there is no quick fix!to achieve what i want, i NEST my timeline, and apply Graeme Nattress’s “Smart de-interlace”
that is the best quality “in-FCP” solution.
working in FCP means i can tweak individual shots if needed, unlike compressor.cheers,
