Does anyone render out lengthy .mp4 files?
Hi – I apologize for posting this a second time, but I thought I’d catch a few new eyes this time. Upgrading all of our machines to Vegas 9 has halted because of this issue.
Working on a Vegas 9c machine and rendering files using the Main Concept .mp4 / Apple iPod 640×480 template, my rendered files are causing Quicktime Player to freeze when I try to scroll/jump/or pause the video. The longer the video, the longer Quicktime Player freezes before resuming. When you get up to the 45 minute mark, Quicktime Player will freeze for nearly 5 minutes. I have tried playing this video on multiple computers, always with the same result in Quicktime Player.
The videos work completely fine in vlc player, but since we syndicate our podcasts to iTunes, quicktime player compatibility is a must.
I should also point out that rendering the exact same footage, on the exact same machine but with Vegas 6 works fine.
Anyone ever come across this?

I don’t do any long mp4 renders but have you tried the Sony AVC codec? Does it give you the same problem? I do up to 30 min mp4 renders with the Sony AVC codec without any problems. Also, if VLC doesn’t have the problem with the same file it may be a Quicktime problem?
As a workaround, you might want to render to an intermediate format and render using Quicktime Pro. I’d also log the problem with Sony since this should not be happening but perhaps it’s a MainConcept problem that Sony has no way to fix.

Following up on this… it turns out it is an issue specifically with Vegas 9c – I alerted Sony to the issue and they were able to replicate it on their machines. They are hoping to have this fixed for Vegas 9d. In the meantime, Sony recommended reverting back to 9b.
We went back to 9b and the issue has been resolved. Lengthy .mp4 files play fine in Quicktime Player.
