Just curious. I’m loving 64bit CS5, but one of the most hyped features was the Rotobrush.
The demos of it sounded too good to be true, and I have found that to be the case.
Every time I try it, I find it takes me longer than traditional mask based rotoscoping.
I have to watch it like a hawk, and constantly have to correct it.
If I miss something in the middle i have to go back and redo the whole thing.
It seems like you would need to have a perfect shot for it to get it to work right.

Rotobrush is my friend. You still need to keep your eye on it as you say, but keeping my eye on it is way more interesting and tolerable than pushing points. Think of it as if you are sculpting your matte…

As Dave said, you have to follow the RB protocol for sure.

My use may not equal your use so our experiences are likely different. (I cut out a lot of animation – not so much live action.)

    Anyway, I’m a fan.

Also, if you can do it faster with a traditional mask – do that.

Good to know some people like it. I went through the protocols before, but I still found it slow and awkward. Maybe I’m missing something and should go over them again. It sounds like correcting brush strokes are supposed to propagate in both directions, but they only seem to propagate later for me.

I’ve gotten very good at traditional rotoscoping over the years (it was my first paid AE job), so that might be part of it too.

It’s a tool that may work great for some shots- other shots you will need to do classic roto. Anyway, no other tool can do a rough matte as fast, so I give it thumbs up!

I agree with Mr. LaRonde. It’s not very intuitive. But I have actually had some decent results with it.
