Does anyone have any tips on how to create a kind of flickering out of focus look?
Hey
Ok ill try and explain better now, basically i want to have a 3d camera kind of flicker in and out of focus, you know like u can see on old films and stuff? not a great deal, just a little bit subtly….im guessing maybe a wiggle to focal length or aperture size….just wondered if anyone had any experience with this kind of thing?

I use the wiggler applied to the opacity or a luma effect on a layer for flickering light (or on a comp light’s intensity for realism). I think it could also apply to your situation.
Seems like you are on the right track. Another option – lo-fi as it is – put a blur on the layer you want to defocus and apply the wiggler to that.Good luck.

actually the effect your looking for is probably due the film not seating consistently in an old projector, rather than the camera…. wiggling the blur amount (as mentioned) on an adjustment layer should work well to mimic this effect.
however, it might be a pretty interesting effect to have the dof of the camera wiggling in and out… where the focal range randomly shifts from foreground to background. the method you proposed should do that.
