Does :01 mean one frame or one second?
Posted by John Stanowski on March 22, 2019 at 9:01 pmDoes :01 mean one frame or one second?
I have specs from WDAF which ask for a spot with slate and “there must be :01 black video before and after spot”.
I called the station and had to leave a message. Thought I’d ask here while waiting.

March 22, 2019 at 11:51 pmI would take that to mean one frame. 1:00 is one second. Hmmm…but thirty second spots are called :30 spots.
Yeah, this is a thing they need to tell you.

Why?
One reason for having black before / after is to make butt-edits so there is black between the commercials.
No way you ever see two seconds of black between them, two frames makes totally sense.I would guess it’s a frame, but that is just a guess.

March 24, 2019 at 9:52 pmThing is what makes sense doesn’t always matter. Like I said before, I get all kinds of specs from Stations. Some of them are very specific, some of them are so brief it almost seems like they’re annoyed they have to tell you. And I don’t always trust the people making/sending these specs. Over half of them seem to be more interested in teaching you how to use an FTP program to send them rather than making sure you prep the video correctly for them.

April 1, 2019 at 9:52 pmConsidering how sloppy some local cable companies can be, and the relative age of their play-out automation gear, my guess would be their play-out system needs one second of black “handles” front and back, to allow for dissolve transitions between other programming segments.
