Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Do you think Apple will ever update FCP’s UI?

FCP’s interface change in 2002 or 03 with version 4 was a pretty big functionality change to the timeline interface. It went from a cuetsy 1 video, 2 audio source clip, to a full on Avid-like multi video and multi audio track patching system. It also added soloing and other track monitoring tools like autoselects.

The next version should be a game changer all around since FCP is written in Carbon, in which Apple is no longer going to support it in 64bit. Cocoa should be the code of choice, Compressor and Motion I believe are both written in this. Also with Open CL being recently standardized, we should see some pretty cool changes in the Next FCP. I wonder though, if they re-write it in a different code how stable will it be or will they come out with a whole other editor and make you pay extra for it. I’m not a programmer but just my 2 cents worth.

With the miniscule Beta team they use these days, it really doesn’t matter how it’s written. Stability will most likely be lacking in all but the exact set-ups that were used on the beta systems. I’m sure the FCP team would prefer a much larger beta pool, but obviously someone in management decided it should be kept to the absolute minimum.

Not all of FCP is written in Carbon – look at the Log & Transfer window, that is Cocoa.

Log and Capture for HDV is Cocoa but the main Log & Capture is still Carbon. The core of FCP is still Carbon which will have to be re-written at some point if they choose to further advance FCP. I think this is why we heard rumors of Apple trying to sell it last year (I don’t think they will).

However doesn’t sound like it’s a big priority on their to do list, iPods and iPhones are too hot for them to deal with right now.

There is much that could be done to make it more fun to use, easier to navigate. But the graphical presentation isn’t the problem so much as the design of the UI and the total lack of common interface elements among the suite’s applications.
Will they finally stick a stake through AutoSelect? Aw, nevermind, that just starts me on a long list of gripes for which I have no truly helpful suggestions.
We’ll update when FCS3 ships and be glad of it.

I agree. Adobe has done a lot to unify their UI across all of their apps. When you bounce from Illustrator to Photoshop to AE, there are a lot of common elements. The little tear off pallets, the browser windows all work the same between them.

FCP, Motion, DVDSP, Color, Shake all have very different UIs, because they originated in different shops from different programming teams. I suspect it’s a lot of work, but it wouldn’t hurt for Apple to unify the common elements & functions.

For what it’s worth- I’ll draw on my real job, Usability & Human Factors and allude to one of Jakob Nielsens 10 original heuristics,
    #6 “Recognition rather than recall”
If the UI has stood the test of time and is effective, efficient and satisfactory, then don’t cause a revolution in re-training so as to extract a small & less than revolutionary improvement in workflow.
I’ve used & fixed some of the worst UI’s on the planet (anyone remember the original Debabelizer?) FCP was pretty darn good right from V1.0
Now gradual and logical changes have occurred in the form of simplified spin-offs (FCE) so kudos to Apple for taking a non-invasive approach to UI options
I’ll tell you this though- ALL software has to become more iMovie HD6 like so we can all spend more time on vacation and less time wading through tomes of manuals
