Do you know anything about “Printing to Tape”?

Yes, you can print your short to DV tape, and watch it on your television. There are two ways of doing it. You can render an AVI, and then use the Vegas capture utility to print the AVI to tape. Or you can print directly from the timeline, by going to Tools, and then Print Video to Tape. It will go though some rendering and finally print the timeline to tape.

You camera, of course, has to be connected via Firewire, just as it is when you capture. And make sure the tape in the camera is either blank, or that you don’t mind recording over whatever is on the tape. Vegas will warn you that you’re about to “destroy” any data currently on the the tape.

You can also have NO tape in the camera. You then work in manual mode and will get a count-down screen upon completion of the necessary renderings.

SWEET!!! So, would Printing to Tape be a lot faster than normal rendering and burning of a movie to DVD, and would it use less resources?

Because currently, I’m having HUGE problems with a short that is due on Wednesday, but because I’m using laptop, and can’t use anything else, renders takes AAAAAAAAAGES and usually it doesnt even finish rendering. It just stops.

So…is printing to tape my savior???

Yes, the amount of rendering necessary will depend on how many effects and superimposed titles etc you have applied. If there are passages of “untouched” DV video, these do not need rendering before printing to tape – unless you create a single avi first, but even then rendering will be a lot faster than the total recompression needed for DVD/MPEG2.

See, the thing is, I’ve had a HUGE problem.

I render to .avi Pal DV Best Rendering Quality, and it takes LONG LONG time. I’m asking: would Printing to Tape be a faster process than rendering to .avi Pal DV Best?

Why are you rendering using Best mode? Unless there’s a really good reason (lots of stills that MUST be of excellent quality), Good is good enough – and a lot less strain (& time) on the render process.

Edward, this does not work for me since I went from V5 to V6. Now the SW insists on a tape in my DSR20 VCR before it will start the PTT process.
I do not see the logic of this because
1- I can put a tape with record tab on
2- I can take the tape out once PTT process is kicked off.

I use a deck instead of a camera and Vegas 6 still allows me to work with no tape in the deck.
