Do USB Mics Record in Real-Time with Vegas?
Hi Guys
I spent about $200 on some high quality mic. It’s the AT2035. It has an XLR connector and the cable I need to convert it from XLR to USB costs $80 (which Id rather not spend if this won’t work).
My question: Will a USB mic work with Sony Vegas and allow real time recording?
My current (low quality) mic connects via the red mic input on my computer. However I am unsure if Sony Vegas will detect and allow my new Mic to work via the USB.
Please let me know if USB mics work with Vegas

I have a Samson Gtrack usb mic which records in real time. With the g track I can real time monitor too. I have vegas six.

I just got a Zoom H2, which is a field recorder but can serve as a audio I/O USB interface for either Windows or Mac OS X, and it works great in Vegas. I don’t know about cheaper USB mics though.

First, the AT2035 is a condenser mic and requires 48v phantom power to work. Does the USB “cable” you are buying supply phantom power? If not, it won’t work with your mic.
Second, the key is recording with low latency with Sony software is to get an audio interface with ASIO drivers. These drivers will allow the low latency required to record in real-time. Not sure if the USB cable you are talking about has this or not.
Before spending $80 on just a cable, I would look at buying a complete USB audio interface that has speaker outputs, headphone outputs, XLR/Instrument inputs, and phantom power. Something like the M-Audio MobilePre USB ($129) should get the job done. Just make sure it has drivers for your Operating System. Not everyone has Vista 64 drivers yet but Vista 32 and XP Pro should be fine.

Ok perfect!

Or do I need an XLR to XLR cable?

You need a standard microphone XLR male to XLR female cable like this.

and yes after I bought the product off eBay I noticed there was a CHEAPER USB model (so not only would I have saved $40, I wouldnt have had to buy the cable or the mixer, c’est la vie)
