  • Do those new black mac pros speed up Premiere much?

Wondering what everyone’s experience has been.

I haven’t used the new black mac pro. Are they really worth it? I’m don’t use 4k. Using Premiere. But color grading and effects slows my machine down and I have to render a ton. Current set up is recent gen iMac.

    Thanks in advance!

From what I’ve heard, it has not been optimized for premiere yet, only for final cut.

Export/Rendering times are very fast, since Media Encoder is able to use both GPUs to encode files. However, using both GPUs for debayering Red RAW footage is still due to a further update, which should be out by the end of June.

    Hi,

[Matthias Duyck] “From what I’ve heard, it has not been optimized for premiere yet, only for final cut.”

Are you referring to the article by “The Verge?” FWIW, by looking at their article, they did not run their tests with the latest version of Premiere Pro.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

If you use a version of PPro that’s pre-CC, the GPUs won’t be utilized.

As of version CC, any GPU that satisfies minimum requirements is utilized…and the new CoffeeCanPros have GPU in spades…

But as I said above, a “full” usage of both FirePro cards in the nMP will only come with the next release of CC, since Adobe rewrote most, if not all effects to OpenGL and implemented debayering with one gpu, while using the other GPU for playback only. So I’m really excited to see all the changes on June 18th.

I suppose this does depend on how you use the machine and what formats you work with…not everyone edits RED R3D footage.

You can use one GPU with Media Encoder while the other one is working for Premiere Pro with the current version…

What applications are you using? Yes Adobe has Open CL support for the GPU’s on the nMPro however Nvidia cards still perform better with Adobe. Ray Tracer in AE is Nvidia only but only accelerates certain processes. Most of the time it’s not used by many. 10.9.3 currently is showing some issues with Adobe and the Open CL acceleration on the nMPro so if you insist on continuing on OSX, you may want to wait on updates to resolve those issues.

I’m curious about this, too. But I’m guessing things will change significantly after tomorrow’s Adobe keynote. Wringing every bit of performance out of the Darth Mac is surely near the very top of Adobe’s list of priorities for Premiere.
