  • Do I need to do anything special to burn a 8.5 dual layer DVD?

Posted by Art White on December 12, 2013 at 4:49 am

I just got CC but I can’t dynamic link from Premiere because I upgraded from CS5 and use Encore CS5 to burn DVDs but I’m way over 4.7gb. I’ve never used a 8.5 GB dual layer. Encore gives me the option with my burner. Any special instructions for burning and playing a dual layer?
    Thanks

    Hi Art,

How long is the video? You may not need a DL disc – might be as simple as lowering the bitrate. DL discs come with a lot of headaches, such as getting the Layer Break to work properly, compatibility issues with players, more expense, etc.

When manually encoding the MPEG-2 DVD file, use 560/minutes = bitrate, or find an online bitrate calculator app and plug in your specifics.

    Thanks

    Jeff,
Thanks. I did some looking and learned how to lower the bit rate in Adobe Media Encoder, which I’ve never used before. The video wasn’t that long but I experimented with 4 HD cameras this time for a pageant and it ended up being 6.6GB, something I’ve never experienced before. I bought a few DL DVD’s and you are right. They don’t give them away. I’m burning one now as a backup and learning experience in case I have to use them.

    Thanks for the good contact,
    Art

Actually, I can’t get the DL to burn with an error after ordering files, before building file systems, sorting I get the access denied. Never seen that one before

Be sure you run “as administrator” (for PC). Not sure what you call it on Mac. This is different than running under an account with administrative rights.

You mean right click on the Encore project and run as? I’ll try that in a bit

Yes, “run as.” If that is it, you can set it to do that always. With Encore, it is a good idea whether doing du al layer or not. But it has been a deal breaker for dual layer.

    Good call Stan,
Burned just fine after that. Odd that was the problem but glad it was!
