I have MPEG footage recorded on a SONY DVD406 that usually looks fine when I preview it in Premiere, but when I render it as an AVI and watch it in Media Player (on an LCD monitor) it has a lot of combing. I don’t really know much about interlacing, or about how the different video formats work, so I’m pretty stuck on how to sort this out. Might it be the render settings I’m using? I tried Andrew Kramer’s de-interlacing tutorial for AE, but I think it may have been written for an earlier version of that programme (I use AE7) and I got stuck. That said, I’m wondering if I even need to de-interlace: will this problem clear up by itself when I burn my AVI to DVD and watch it on a TV?

Sorry if I’ve not given enough information for people to offer advice. If you need to know something more, please let me know. Thanks for reading!

It’s always really up to you, and no simple decision. You either get interlacing lines, or you get a loss of resolution if you de-interlace. The loss of resolution would probably be fine for a web video however.

I hardly ever notice interlacing once something is on DVD , but it depends on the DVD player and TV.

For web video de-interlace the footage. LCDs show up zebra lines even in small window sizes. You won’t notice the loss in resolution either.
