    Hi Black Magic experts,

I am interested in obtaining a Decklink SDI. I am a little unclear about what I actually need to hook this up to a pro broadcast monitor. Would I need to buy a sync generator? I see that the Decklink’s breakout cable has a reference cable, and the Broadcast monitor has a reference input.

Do I need to plug a Sync generator into the Blackmagic Decklink? Or does the Blackmagic generate its own reference to the monitor?

I am only doing SD and HD 1080i (29.97). I am not doing any 23.94 at his point.

    Do I need a tri-level sync generator to output 1080 (29.97).

Thanks in advance for your help.

if you are NOT working with VTR’s (video tape recorders), then no, you do not need a sync gen – either standard, or tri level (and the Blackmagic sync gen does both). If you are working with a VTR (like a Digi Beta VTR, or HD Cam VTR), then YES, you need a sync gen.

Besides the vertical blanking being in the middle of the screen when I monitor my layoffs to my UVW 1800 w.o a sync gen, am I making an inferior master? They play back fine.

Can the deck be locked to the composite output of the the Decklink studio for refernece? I use component I.O for the deck for signal.
