  • Do I need a CUDA driver for this Macbook Pro?

I’ve got a mid-2012 MBP with 2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7, running OS 10.8.5, 8 GB RAM, with 2 graphics cards installed: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650 M 1024 MB and an Intel HD Graphics 4000.

I’ve set OS 10 to disable automatic graphics switching when I edit.

When I look at Premiere Pro Preferences I have options to select Mercury Engine GPU Acceleration Open CL or Mercury Engine Software Only.

I ran across this article that suggests I’m not getting the use of the NVIDIA card because I don’t have a driver installed?
    https://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2013/09/13/enabling-cuda-for-the-mercury-playback-engine-in-the-macbook-pro-retina/

Does this make sense? Would I get much better performance by installing this driver than using the Open CL option?

The system doesn’t seem to be taxed right now except when using Red Giant plugins for uprezing and deinterlacing. Though the MBP seems to run a little slow overall. I constantly reboot when I’m going to use Pr Pro cause it seems to free up memory. Pr has crashed on me a few times.

    Thanks for your thoughts,
    Robert

You have CUDA cores on that card. Update the drivers and use them.

    Robert,

Go here: CUDA downloads and be sure to click on the Mac tab. This will allow you to download CUDA for your Mac which will show up as a system preference.

Also, be sure to disable automatic graphics switching in the energy saver section. This will default all display options to your more powerful NVIDIA chip than the Intel one.

Hi, I wanted to know if anyone has encountered the same problem. I have a macbook pro mid 2010 with GeForce GT 330M (512MB) with premiere CS6 It worked great, but with CC 2014 GPUSniffer me by this result “Not chosen Because of insufficient video memory”. Can you tell me how to avoid this problem? Thanks!

    Hi Alessandro,

Premiere Pro requires a minimum of 786MB of ram.

Thanks for the answer, but it makes me angry all this, I am convinced that it could do it, but as a matter of marketing I have to buy a more powerful computer!
