  • do I have a compressor problem?

Posted by Darren Vallence on January 16, 2009 at 11:39 pm

I am working in FCP and have 2 sequences that I want to send to compressor. I click on seq one and then export to compressor, it opens up and all is good,
I then minmise compressor and the beach ball just keeps spinning over fcp which means I cant choose another sequence to go up to compressor to batch from fcp ( with the beach ball spinning over fcp at the same time you cant touch fcp ) but have it over compressor and you can do compressor stuff, please help

    Does this sound right?

I can’t give too much help or advice for this, but I can tell you that it’s normal. I have a similar issue on my computer. I’ve found that when choosing the “export using compressor” option, Final Cut Pro is unusable until compressor has finished processing the video.

That’s been my experience, at least. Perhaps somebody else can chime in and explain why or whether or not there is a setting that can be changed to allow Final Cut to remain usable.

Generally when I have used Compressor, I NEVER use the “Send to Compressor” function and it always results in issues. Best to Export a Quicktime Movie from your timeline, you can do a reference movie, and then take that manually into Compressor.

That being said, I’ve finally had enough of all the flakiness we’ve had with Compressor not starting a render, getting stuck in the middle of a render or just not completing a render. I even went so far as to completely erase our pretty new Octo Core over the holiday break and re-install everything from scratch. Compressor worked fine for two weeks, but this week it started hanging on renders again.

So today I purchased Episode Pro and I really have no idea what I was waiting for. Reliable and it renders very fast since it takes advantage of all the cores without the need to create a “virtual cluster.”

    Hi Darren,
Have been like that since the beginning of Compressor.
You need to send all the jobs from FC to Compressor before to start Compressor working.
When you send from FC to Compressor the two application works together.
Compressor can work in the background, but FC can not.
I prefer to do as Walter suggest: Export a Self-contained movie and send it to Compressor or any other appilcation (I’m using BitVice for MPEG-2).
When you send something to get a “Double pass” in Compressor, everything have to be rendered twice, even if your sequence have been fully rendered.
