I hired a young photographer who has hopes of making it a career. It was a simple shoot and I wasn’t expecting much on this particular occasion. Anyway, the guy was friendly, positive, enthusiastic, and he wanted to please, but too much so. He commented several times on how good the photos were, but they were middling at best. I don’t need someone to tell me how good their work is. I’ll be the judge of that. He wasn’t looking at his stuff critically. This is for my business, so if I’m going to use something, it has to meet a very high standard. Anyway, I wrote him a letter and said I wouldn’t need his services any more. He asked me to leave a positive review, which I can’t do. Should I try to explain to him why?

When you told him you wouldn’t need his services, you were giving him feedback. Most clients simply “ghost” an unsatisfactory vendor; you took the trouble to say “Go away.”

If his plight bothers you, you may look for a way to give him a more direct critique. You could ask him how it’s going. If he says “Great,” you can relax; if not, you could ask him why he thinks that’s happening, and then present more detailed feedback in the way of a possible explanation.

You sound like a caring person. Good luck.

I don’t think you should leave a positive review on something you don’t like. However, as a specialist I would like if my client simply told me that he liked or didn’t like.

Yes, it’s generally a good practice to provide feedback to a photographer, especially if you have hired them for a specific job or if they have shared their work with you for review. Constructive feedback can help photographers improve their skills and better meet your expectations. However, it’s essential to offer feedback in a polite and respectful manner, focusing on specific aspects that you’d like to see improved or highlighting what you liked about their work.
