Do I edit in 4k then export to HD or edit the 4k in HD timeline?

I have a project where about half of it was shot in 4k or above and the rest is in HD. There’s some parts where I blow up some of the HD so I think my final output SHOULD be HD. It’s a short film and I plan on taking it to festivals.

Should I bring the 4k footage into the HD timeline then just scale it down, or should I edit in 4k, then in the end out to HD?

Does it matter or is it exactly the same?

Editing 4K in an HD timeline means you can scale the 4K better…zoom in if you need. If you edit in a 4K timeline, you can’t do that, not without losing quality but scaling over 100%. If your deliverable is HD…or even 2K DCP…edit in those frame sizes. Edit in the deliverable frame size.

Downside to this when wanting to use Warp Stabilizer you will have to nest first.
