I’ve read several posts on here that said PPro can export DNxHD simply by downloading the codec from Avid. That sounded like it could be very helpful, so I decided to try it. But no matter what settings I use, Media Encoder gives me an error message and doesn’t encode at all, which is very puzzling. Do I need to have an Avid product installed in order to use it?

It most certainly can encode. You probably have made an error in settings. check every single one to. Make sure they make sense.

Two other things: unlike Apple Pro Res, Avid DNX is only for HD. In addition, you must use standard broadcast frame sizes and frame rates. You can’t customize at all.

I can also confirm it works fine for encode and import, without any Avid hardware.
You are accessing it via QuickTime, yes?
