I have one of my DL Extreme’s in a ASUS P4C800 Deluxe with a 3.2G CPU and 2 gig RAM. It does not have any 64 bit slots.

I was having severe video stalling problems when playing a complicated and populated timeline but the audio (4 channel out to tape) was playing perfectly. It was so bad that the vision playback and associated timecode display in Premiere would be over 5 mins behind after 20 mins.

As the audio was playing back perfectly I assumed that the audio takes precedence over video playback. I was using 2x250G SATA drives in a raid 0 array and all my media including renders and conformed audio was coming off the same drive. So now to my solution….

The problem was Premiere’s ‘conformed audio’. I simply installed another hard drive as a single SATA, deleted all the original conformed audio files (it was 12G worth!) and re-conformed the audio to the separate drive. Now I have perfect playback of picture AND 4 channel audio back out to the Digibeta deck. Who said playing audio was less demanding on a hard drive!

So it stands to reason why I was having the problem with the poor raid drive desparately seeking all that dispersed data and now will always remember to put the conformed audio anywhere but the video media drive.

Hopefully it will solve others with similar performance problems.

    Hi Baz,

Thank you for posting your problem and solution. That is very useful information for anyone running a 2 disk SATA array. If more disks had been RAID’ed together, you would not have noticed this problem but your solution is equally valid and clearly overcame the problem. Thanks for posting the solution and I have created a technical note including your solution named Video increasingly lags behind audio in Premiere Pro 🙂
