What is you OS? If you are using XP or a 32 bit system, that could be your problem. I saw a HUGE difference when I went to Win 7 64bit…just a possibility..

Thanks Scott. I am using Win 7 Pro 64bit. I have been speakingwith a friend about this and he suggested that I need my media storage in Raid 0. Utilizing 4 HDD’s in Raid 0 and connected via eSata or Firewire. He believes that is where my bottleneck is coming from.

It’s AVCHD mostly from a DSLR. Full 1080 / 30p.

That may be your issue, AVCHD is tough to edit….maybe try an intermediate format…I have AVCHD too and a hexacore system and it slows it down a bit too….I am looking at neoscene for conversion…good luck!

Thanks Scott. Perhaps the Raid 0 Media Drive set up will do the trick. I have also heard that Cineform is a good idea. My thoughts were to build a system that was alot more robust than my last and that that would do the trick but apparently not. Thanks again for the info!

If you are editing uncompressed 4K HD. Everything else, a 7200 RPM SATA drive is fast enough.

You don’t say *where* you are experiencing the “bottleneck”, but since you indicate AVCHD, I’ll assume it’s your preview that is less than perfect. Welcome to highly compressed editing.

If yo are only doing simple cuts and dissolves, then an i7 is sufficient. Add any fx and even the mighty i7 Extreme will be challenged. Transcoding is your on;y solution for now.

Thanks Stephen. I am beginning to think you are right. I am thinking about Cineform for the transcoding. I have EpicDV right now but I am not sure it was the right choice. Seems a little cumbersome. Do you have a preference?

Building a RAID 0 with 4 hard drives is a good idea. But my own experience suggests keeping the drives internal. If you use external and firewire, make sure it is 800. Esata is a lot better than USB but internal was overall a better choice for me. I say this after trying all the other choices.

Your mobo has plenty unused sata connectors and your power supply is 750 watts, so all you need are the drives and a place to mount them.

Thanks Larry – I actually have eSata, USB 3.0, and firewire. So did you use the Raid 0 for your media files. Did you try the software (like Cineform) for transcoding as well as an option? Can you tell me more about your experience with the Raid 0? Like, what percentage faster was it? or how many more MBs/sec faster was it? I have punch outs in the back of my case that I believe are there to allow me to set up components outside the box and run the cable back in and directly to the motherboard. Do you see any options with that?

Overall I like the idea of the raid 0 being in the box so I don’t have to buy another piece of equipment (i.e. the Raid Storage – they can be pricey), however, I am concerned about the heat build up.
