Distribution Shift
Posted by Franz Bieberkopf on November 25, 2013 at 12:41 amA fairly comprehensive review of recent data (U.S. only):

Viewership seems to be steady (though I seem to recall reading somewhere it’s still rising):

“In Q2 2013, the average American spent close to 39 hours per week engaging with content across all screens while logging four hours and 19 minutes of traditional TV daily.”Franz.

November 25, 2013 at 12:08 pmThe most uprisings part of that stats is the 39 hours. Watching programming has become a full time job regardless of platform.

November 25, 2013 at 6:20 pmIIRC from when I was doing research for a program about 10 years ago, the then current Neilsen stats had a WATCHED set on in the average tv household something like 8.4 hours a day.
In the tv heyday, we certainly did love our TV shows.

November 25, 2013 at 7:19 pmTo me, it’s so easy. Stop punishing your current and loyal customers.
Cable companies lure you in with great deals, then 6 months later they raise the price significantly. You cannot renegotiate for another year or more.
Cell phone companies lock you in to contracts, but they don’t raise the price six months in to it.
As a consumer, it’s in my best interest to look around at other competition as I get the best deals that way. How is that good business practice?

November 25, 2013 at 10:17 pmI haven’t had a TV in 5 years. You do miss it occasionally. The Day of the Doctor there for instance.

Kinda like a certain software company that comes to mind… 😉

November 27, 2013 at 11:04 pmMmm. Kinda.
Unfortunately, I can’t bill clients if I watch cable tv. 🙂
I’m a “cable cord cutter”. After we had our baby and moved, we did not re-up our cable subscription.
I was tired of getting hit with ridiculous equipment rental charges for old and outdated equipment (I called after having the same gear for five years to try and get newer, faster equipment, or stop paying for something I had paid for many times over. No dice). I was tired of paying for what I didn’t want, but had to pay for it in order to get what I really wanted (HBO et al). It was a high monthly bill.
Baby gotta eat.
PBS just came to the AppleTV for free. It has been a great gift.
Now, if I could pay $20/mo and make an adult income off of it, I’d gladly pay! 😛

Again, that reminds me of a certain software company, lol! 😉
