Hello! I use Illustrator for basic, clean vector (pen tool) logo creation. That’s about it. I’m trying to distress a logo for a T-Shirt design. I want it to have grungy or marbled holes through the logo. How/can you do this in Illustrator?

    Thanks, Chris

Ahhhhhh! I found opacity masks in Adobe help! That’s a good start. If there’s any other wisdom out there, I’d still be glad to hear it.

I don´t fully understand what you want with it.
But if you want an angry design holes in your element you could try this:

Go to google.com and Search for “Brick wall” Find a nice clean brick wall, large or extra large picture.

Then, save it to your mac/pc and open the picture in illustrator.
Click on the picture, go to Object/LiveTrace/Tracing option
Make sure you have the mode in black and white, play alittle with the settings until it is perfect.
Then click trace. Then you have to click Expand.

Now click on the white with the Direct selection tool, and the click, Select/same/fill color then remove the color.

Now take your element under the “brick wall”-layer, select both the layers and click “Subtract from shape area” on the Pathfinder. When you click expand you wil now have a rughy design!

You can try the roughen effect if you want to stay totally vector. effect–>distort & transform–>roughen
