distortion when moving camera in 3D – why???
Posted by Spiro on June 21, 2005 at 2:58 pmI have a camera looking down on three other images in 3D space. Everything looks fine when I move the camera back and forth along the Z axis. But when I move the camera to the left and right, or up and down (X and Y axis?) it totally distorts the images below.
Is there a way to move the camera left-n-right & up-n-down without distorting the images?
Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

June 21, 2005 at 3:13 pmIt sounds as if you should turn off the camera’s auto-orient feature. Save the project, then select the camera, then layer>transform>auto-orient.

June 21, 2005 at 4:47 pmNew problem! Using the same setup as I mentioned earlier, but with the Auto-Orient now set, I created a keyframe for the camera’s initial position. Then I moved the timeline marker down a bit and tried to change the position of the camera, but the screen turned completely black.
I’ve tried to do this several times using different positions, but the screen keeps turning black. Does anyone know what’s going on???
Thanks.

June 21, 2005 at 5:29 pmTake a look at your timeline to see if any layers begin or end where the screen turns black. I’m talking about lights, solids, footage, etc.
Also, try switching to another view then pulling back to see what’s going on in the 3D space.

June 21, 2005 at 5:31 pmSwitching to camera view doesn’t cause you to lose resolution — something else is happening in your comp. Check to make sure you haven’t accidentally changed resolution or magnification for the comp.

June 21, 2005 at 5:59 pmI switched to the top view. When I alter either the X or Y positions the camera completely flips, like, 90 degrees. Not sure why.
I changed the Auto-Orient to “Orient Towards Point of Interest” and I’m now having better luck. Still, I’m not sure why the camera flips like that when in “Orient Along Path”???

June 21, 2005 at 6:12 pmYou need to know what the camera is doing when you make those choices.
“Orient towards Point of Interest” means the camera is always pointing towards a point in space: the point of interest or POI. Select the layer in the timeline and hit A to show the XYZ position values of the POI. In the comp window, in one of the custom views, the POI is the thing the camera is aiming at. If you move the camera past the POI, it will flip so it is still looking at the POI.
“Orient along Path” is only useful when the camera is moving along a path — then the camera will look ahead along that path.
Different orientations are useful in different situations.
I’m assuming you read the manual on these issues?
If that doesn’t help you, read Rick Gerard’s camera tutorial on the COW. If you’re still stuck, search the COW (include the archives) on “gimbal lock”.

June 21, 2005 at 6:20 pmI have Trish & Chris Meyer’s books. I’m starting to get the hang of this, but I’ll dig into their books some more. I’ll look up Rick’s tutorial as well. Thanks for your help with this!
