  • Distorter Shader not working in Viewport

Posted by Peter Temper on March 23, 2016 at 11:29 pm

    Hi,

when i use the distorter shader the actual texture gets distorted when rendered but the effect isn’t shown in the shader window in the material editor or in the viewport when the material is used on an object. It’s always the original texture. What might not sound as a problem is annoying when you want to use it to drive a TurbulenceFD simulation as it always uses the undistorted texture. Is there a hidden attribute i might miss? I am working with R17.048 Studio.

Thanks for your help in advance

I think that’s a limitation of the shader. Only way around it I can think of would be to bake the shader.

Thank you for your answer. But why does it work without any problems in every tutorial i have seen where they use the distorter, even in older versions (like R14 for example).

Hmm, I just checked and it works correctly in R16. Looks like a bug introduced with R17. I’ll report it to Maxon.

Interesting that Mograph’s Shader Effector can see the Distorter but X-particles cannot, nor can TP’s Matter Waves node.

I thought of a bug too, cause setting the distorter up is straightforward.
I made a workaround and distorted the animated texture in after effects.
Maybe it’s working with the next update. Thanks for the help anyway.
And maybe someone could delete the double post 🙂

Adam, saw the post on CGTalk but they seem to have size limits on attachments

    – this is all on the Mac

10.5 – good (my own test as yours won’t open – just the gesture not the particles)
12 – not good when it opens but if you adjust something in the Distorter (I just swapped Directional-Bidirectional-Directional) it redraws in the display (don’t know if that’s totally correct end but not perfect in the EOGL I’m thinking)
    13 – same as 12
    14 – same as 12
    15 – good
    16 – not good
    17 – not good

Thanks, Brian, I appreciate it. I resubmitted it to Maxon so hopefully they’ll put it on their to-do list.
