Check for square vs. non-squrae pixels, and check the sequence settings to see if it’s anamorphic

FCP attempts to resize anything to match you sequence settings, unless you use Import and tell it not to.

So, double click on the still in you timeline and in the viewer set the parameters to default, and then size accro0ding to your needs.
