    Hello,
I am having a problem dissolving key layers in and out from black. My problem is that I can see the key fading in with the dissolve. I would like to dissolve all layers up from black together. I’m sure there is an easy answer but I’m not finding it. I have tried the transitions in FCP Effects list but they don’t seem to do the trick, unless I’m missing the trick.

    Thanks

Two things you could do. You could NEST the various layers of the timeline and apply one dissolve to the group of layers. The layers are still editable by double-clicking the nest. The other thing is to place a black matte on your top layer and extend the end of the matte over the beginning of the video. Then simply dissolve out of that black matte into your video. Remove all transitions from the front of the video layers – since they’re behind the black matte, they’ll no longer be necessary.

    KC,
Thanks for the response. I tried it both ways. Nesting does work with the dissolve but I found my Live Type layer shifting at the end of the dissolve. One fix creates a new problem. So, I tried the matte layer and found that I could place a slug the length of my dissolve and change the opacity from 100 to 0 and that would act as a dissolve from color. AVID speak, I know, but it did the job. I wish there was a preset transition that did the job but you led me down the right road.
    Thank you,
