  • Dissolves Stopped Working?

    Howdy,

Apologies if this has been addressed before. Digging in the archives found me other folks with the same problem, but no solutions. (CharlieX had the same issue on October 11, 2005 for instance, with FCP 5.)

I’ve been working on a project for several days and suddenly _some_ of my cross-dissolves aren’t working. They’re still visible in the timeline, but on playback the video track just cuts in and out. This is not consistent throughout the same sequence, or even on the same video track. I’ve restarted, trashed prefs, duplicated sequences and so on.

Using a dip-to-color seems to be working as a workaround for now, but I’m wondering if I’m missing anything obvious?

    4GB 667 DDR2 FB-DIMM

Hm…update: Most of these dissolves are dissolving to “nothing”. If I put some “slug” in there to dissolve to, they start working again.

Also, another workaround: Tossing some slug onto the track above the cut and keyframing the opacity will do a fake-dissolve as well.

So I have workarounds. But does anybody know why this is happening? Thanks.

There’s no compelling reason for dissolves to simply stop working.Have you tried simply trashing prefs? Have you added any new software or plugins to your computer lately?

I’ve trashed preferences, yes. And we’re trying not to install new software or plug-ins once we have a semi-stable system. That said, my After Effects guy installed “StuffIt Expander” this morning before I got here. I’d be surprised if that caused the glitchiness, though, no?

Another oddity from this project: Option-shift-T no longer creates audio dissolves. Curiouser and curiouser.

[Steve Courtney] “Option-shift-T no longer creates audio dissolves.”

That’s cuz you need to hit option-command-t, you comedian you.

As far as the other dissolves not working, time to quit FCP, delete your render files, trash your prefs, launch FCP and try again.

Ah, bugger, that’s what I meant of course.

But I just went and deleted all the render files, trashed my prefs again, and relaunched, to no avail. Creating new dissolves has no apparent effect, unless I put in slug to dissolve to. Weirdness.

For what it’s worth, this system did crash four or five times earlier in this project, (last week) so something may have gone goofy then. Still, you’d think trashing prefs would have fixed it.

Alright, as a test. make a brand new project, close your current project and import two pieces of media and dissolve them. What happens then?
