    Hey Guys,

I’ve done some research…because I know this question has been asked before, but I’m finding myself in a corner and I need some help or guidance.

I’m trying to help a friend who got a suped up Mac (dual processor-quad core, a ton of RAM, KONA card) It seems to me that it should be faster/provide more realtime capabilities than it is currently doing.

The place he bought it from sent an installer over to his place and he gave him the old, “Final Cut just doesn’t have very many real-time capabilities”

I don’t buy that…because it seems so many people use it for high-end products.

Getting into it, I’m working with settings and trying to tweak it. The biggest surprise to me is that dissolves aren’t playing in real-time. He is using EX3 footage transcoded to the Pro-Res codec. And in the timeline settings I made sure it matched the footage (Frame-rate / size / codec)

What are some other things to check for? I’m new with Final Cut, so I know I could be missing some things.

It’s a 6TB FusionD800 RAID connected (I believe) through a serial cable directly to the CPU.

You get realtime preview if he’s set in Unlimited RT. Setting playback to Dynamic resolution also helps.

The amount of realtime depends on the format of the edit and the speed of the array. We get approx. 500MB/s on our RAIDs here as an example.

What kind of footage are you working with? Do you use the Pro-Res codec? Is there a better workflow?

Most things he’s doing are being posted in HD and then downconverted to SD onto a DVD.

    P.S.

Oh…the infamous Walter! How is Ryan Hostetler working out for you? I’ve worked with him on a couple projects…he’s a great guy! He made magic editing on a project that I thought, “there’s no way that’s going to work!!” 🙂

[Jason Brown] “Is there a better workflow?”

DVCPRO-HD is a flawless work flow with fcp.

I know a lot of people use ProRes (I do for everything SD) but
some have reported an odd issue or 2 sometimes when using
    it for HD post.

HDCAM, DVCPro HD, HDV, DV, DVCAM, DigiBeta, BetaSX, BetaSP, DVC Pro, XDCAM, DVD, BluRay, etc…

Yes, we work with the ProRes codec, though we work with DVCPro HD more.

Make sure when you are rendering, full has a check mark next to it and not just the preview in the render settings under the sequence menu. the timeline should look pale blue above the timecode tic marks. If it has any green, it is not fully rendered.

I missed this part of the question. Ryan has asked me to tell you he is an incredible storyteller.

Not sure if it’s true, but that’s what he claims. 🙂

He does tell incredible stories, mostly about HOW GOOD of an editor he is!!!

I hope to get down to ATL to visit some family soon, I’d love to visit. Ryan has told me some great things!
