Hello. I just installed AVID express 3.5 in my laptop (I’m a beginner in AVID, just finished the certificate course) .
Although my laptop has only 500 RAM almost everything works fine, color correction, effects, you name it, BUT, when trying to make a simple dissolve the pop up window shows 0 seconds in the in and out, and I am not able to change that value. Is any set up I messed up ?
The other thing (minor problem, anyway), is that I imported an AVI file from a CD, the audio imported fine, but when starting to import the video a message said something that QT couldn’t found the adequate software in the server to import this file. (capturing from a DV deck worked fine) , is that a problem with the AVI file’s codec?

    Thanks for your help.
    Cristian

    Hi,

Here’s what’s causing your dissolve problem. You have two clips, and we’ll call them clip A and clip B. They are both 5 seconds long. If you want to make a sequence that has clip A, then a dissolve into clip B, you have to leave a little extra video at the end of clip A and the beginning of clip B for the system to use to make the dissolve.

If you put all 5 seconds of clip A on the timeline and then all 5 seconds of clip B after it, there is no extra video for the system to make the dissolve from, and it only gives you 0 as a choice for the duration.

So instead, lay the first 4 seconds of clip A on the timeline, then lay the last 4 seconds of clip B. Now add a dissolve and you should have no problem.

    good luck,
    Carl

And there you go…what a simple thing!
    Thanks man!
I am just laughing thinking about the two hours I spent trying to figure this out 🙂

Don’t worry. Everyone else does the same thing the first time they try and do a dissolve. Welcome to the fold. 🙂
