    Hi everyone!
I’m an Apple Color (at home) and Iridas Speedgrade (at a studio) colorist. I’ve been thinking about moving to Resolve since it was released, but I didn’t have the need, nor the time, neither the money to start with it.
Now I’ve finally started, I’ve decided to move to Resolve (at least at home), and I’m in the point in which I need to improve my setup to start “finishing to learn it”.

I don’t want to enter in the discussion about doing things wrong by grading on a computer display. I’ve done it for almost two years now, even completed some HD projects which were premiered in big cinemas with DCP-calibrated projectors and both my clients and I were satisfied with the results.
I’ve even seen some “high end” color grading suites using Scratch or film telecines + color correction hardware with broadcast monitors, which are definitely not correct in terms of calibration.
So, anyway, let’s skip this discussion (thanks).

My previous display was a Dell 2007FP (old bit it still works), and my current display is a Dell U2311H which has DVI and DisplayPort input.
I’m about to purchase a DeckLink card. So I need either a display with an HDMI input, or an HD-SDI-to-DisplayPort/DVI box.
I’m not sure of the “quality” of the HDMI input in the displays (i.e. I know of some displays which enable Dynamic Contrast when using that input, and I surely won’t accept that).
    Any recommendation/advice about that?

    Thanks.
    Rodrigo.

P.S: Is there any list of the Tangent Wave function buttons / keyboard shortcuts? Thx!

    Hi Rodrigo,

    OK, I won’t say anything about color-correcting on a computer display 😉

It is tricky to recommend HDMI computer displays as some of them provide suitable controls for configuring the HDMI input and some don’t. For example, some HDMI computer displays have a 1920 x 1200 resolution and automatically scale the HDMI input to fill the screen. This is bad because your 16:9 video becomes 16:10 and looks a little odd. 4:3 video looks even worse when stretched to fill a 16:10 display.

Many newer 24 and 27 inch computer monitors are 1920×1080 and so high definition video will be presented correctly. However some automatically apply the vivid contrast without any way to turn it off as you have already noted.

Therefore it is important to download the PDF manual for any display you might think of buying and check out the controls it provides for adjusting the HDMI input. As long as there is some way of setting the contrast to something that isn’t vivid, it should be safe to purchase the monitor for your purposes.

Alternatively, you could purchase the HDLink Pro 3D and connect your SDI cable to it and then use a DisplayPort connection to your existing Dell U2311H. You can also use a third party HDMI, DVI or Mini DisplayPort adapter if you want to connect the HDLink Pro to an HDMI, DVI or Mini DisplayPort display. You will still need to check the video input controls, in the associated PDF manuals, to ensure that a vivid contrast is not being applied to the inputs of the monitor.

    I hope this helps.

I would go with hdlink pro on sdi as you could use luts there if needed.

I also have had really good results using apple new display and showing the same spot in cinema.
    Colors were perfect match.

    Wow, thanks Luke.
At the studio we have a Multibridge I/O box (which happens to work with Resolve), and a friend of mine has a Dell U2410 which has HDMI input. I will try to evaluate that setup (comparing it visually to a JVC broadcast monitor through component HD).
If that doesn’t work, I’ll think of the HDlink possibility, which I find more expensive… Except I get an older HDlink with DVI output? What do you think about that option?

    Thanks again,
    Rodrigo.

P.S: I insist with the shortcut questions! Thanks.

Hey guys, thanks for your help.
I bought one HDLink DisplayPort and one DeckLink card, they’l be arriving this week.
I was reading the specs of the HDLink card and I just noticed it says that it needs a 1920×1200 monitor for HD1080 video through DP or DVI-D. My display is DP and DVI-D 1920×1080. No HDMI.
Will it work? Or should I get a 1920×1200 monitor too? :S

    Thanks,
    Rodrigo.

    Hi Rodrigo,

A 1920 x 1080 display will be perfect for HD video. The reference to 1920 x 1200 predates the existence of 1920 x 1080 computer monitors. I’ll ask for that to be updated. Thank you for pointing it out.
