I’ve used After Effects and Apple Color in the past on a normal LCD computer monitor. I am probably going to check out Davinci Resolve Lite or 8.0 and I’ve been reading about production monitors and such.

I am looking for some tips on how I can get a pretty good grade out of something like a Apple Cinema Display LCD Monitor or a LCD/Plasma HD TV. Is this even feasible? Even with it calibrated?

I understand that the go-to answer is ‘you have to spend some money on a good display device’. I don’t really have a budget to be spending thousands of dollars just yet on a monitor. I was wondering
if you guys have any tips on calibrating the monitors I’ve mentioned above or recommend any more affordable monitor solutions for me.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for your time,

    Ryan

Not recommended but it is possible to use a “consumer” display if it is calibrated. You could get a local ISF calibrator to adjust it and see how close you could get to Rec-709 with that. Ideally you would get the display profiled and build a 3D LUT to load into Resolve as a display LUT which would get you allot closer than the basic ISF calibration.

    Would something like the:

NEC MultiSync PA241W-BK-SV 24.1″ Widescreen LCD Monitor with SpectraViewII Color Calibration Solution (B&H and NEC site for details)

have the options for calibrating for Rec709 and hold up well enough for lower budget color correcting in Resolve? I really like the price, and I’m just trying to work with a $1500 – $2000 budget and getting my displays set up here one at a time. I was originally looking into the HP DreamColor and then someone said the x-rite i1 probes wouldn’t do as good as a job calibrating it than the specific ~$500 one designed for the DreamColor.

I’m open for suggestions. I’m looking between 24″-27″ and something that can be calibrated to grade for Rec709.

    Cheers

In regards to the NEC as well. Take a look at how the device and software calibrate it. Sound promising? I’m looking for feedback.
