Ive rendered out a black and white alpha pass of a 3D mesh outof Cinema 4D. The pass is a object buffer which is just a basic black and white alpha channel pass.

I want that alpha pass to displace the footage I have below it. I have everything set up and its displacing the footage, however im having trouble with the sides, top and bottom of the footage. No matter what settings I use, the main footage is moved by the displacement map causing the sides to be black. Its almost as if ive moved the footage over out of the view.

I have a basic understand of how displacement maps work, but I am not sure how to correct this problem. I know that 50% gray will not displace, but the alpha pass I have is solid black, with white and gray areas.

    Any idea?
    Thanks
    Shane

I’m not sure if your alpha has any greys in it, but displacemnt maps needs shades of grey to look good.
    black will displace 0%
    white will displace 100%
the greys inbetween smooth out the displacement.

Ok, then I guess ill have to do this in 2 parts.

The first part will have the black/white alpha, because I need that for the track matte.

The second part, ill have to replace the black with 50% gray, and use that for the displacement.

Or better yet, is there a way to add displacement to areas that only show by the track matte?
