Disenaging the track pad?
Is there a way to disengage the trackpad when I have an external mouse plugged in on a Macbook?
My left hand rests on the keyboard when I edit (ok, I’m lazy…)while my right hand is on the mouse. Similar to what I do with my AVID at work. There my lower plam is resting on the desk top.
Anyone?

Yep, it’s in your System Prefs under Keyboard / Mouse.

There is nothing in here in the system preferences that indicates disengaging the track pad from what I can tell.
It gives the option to slow things down but not disengage the pad all together…this is driving me nutty.

Could that fact that I have the older Macbook Pro be the problem?

Nope. Brad, just click the option as Walter has posted in the screenshot. If you don’t see that option (in the Trackpad preference pane) then can you post some specifics about your system .. what particular MBP revision are you using and what version of OS X are you running on it?

Nope. But if you’re running Snow Leopard, that could be a problem. My trackpad is now working even though I have that option checked. Guess we’ll have to report that to Apple.

Found the solution….I was running OS 10.5.8. I took it over to Mac Business Solutions in Gaithersburg, MD and had it upgraded to Snow Leopard and the my mac finally displayed “disnengage the track pad when mouse is present” in Systems Preferences-Universal Access.
