  • Discreet Surround Channels on the timeline

I rendered an AC-3 file in Vegas with discreet channel audio. I can hear the audio when I play it back on my computer DVD player with all channels (L-C-R-SR-SL).

In Vegas I have all my channels on separate tracks on the timeline. I can panned the audio to all discreet channels. I can hear it on the L-C-R speakers discreetly. But I don’t hear it on the rear surround channels. I have a Sony 6.1 receiver hooked up to a Creative Labs Audigy 2Z card utilizing SPDIF coax cable. Will Vegas spit out on the timeline AC-3 audio or does it need to be rendered out to hear the encoded signal? Maybe Vegas only sends out a PCM audio from the timeline? Any ideas why I can’t hear the rear surround channels on the timeline?

You should have real-time surround monitoring from the timeline.

    Gary,
Are you running the SPIDF connection via a coax cable to an external receiver decoding the 5.1? Can you hear the rear surround sound on the timeline?

If I am not mistaken, Vegas does not output the actual encoded audio signal. It does however output the seperate channels via your sound card. I think the only way to test your actual encoded audio is to burn a DVD and play it back on your surround sound system via the digital in.

Thanks Ted… I am pretty confident that is the case. The sound card will do the decoding directly with digital speakers. Vegas will not pass through a encoded signal on the timeline.

I will work if you take the individual outputs from the soundcard and have the capability to put those 6 individual outputs into a surround reciever that allows you to input the 6 individual surround sound cables into the receiver. Thats what I have working here, so I can tweak and mix during playback.

    Hope that helps.
