Using Pr CS5.5 running on MacPro Intel dual quad-core under Mtn Lion, 6GB of RAM. The workflow is the entire project (except the OS and app) is within its own folder on a separate SAS media drive which is 5/6 free, and all caches and clips are assigned adjacent folders within the same master folder.
This project is a DVCPROHD 720p/23.976, so low-load media and cache, but looks good. I clean cache as a routine part of launching this session which I’m doing over a period of several days between other chores. Everything seems to work as expected EXCEPT that when I render a new part of the timeline, it’s okay until I stop the auto-play of the render for further work, at which point the red line re-appears over the fresh render. Doesn’t seem to wanna stick. If I re-render four times, its okay. Ummm…why?

That’s a meta data issue where it’s not keeping track of the preview cache files created by rendering. Delete the Preview folders for that project after you close it. Reopen the project and it will recreate the folder. Render a section of the timeline and then go to the preview folder location and see if preview files are created.

It’s hand set in prefs to go on the media drive in the Project’s folder. It makes new folders there for the media cache and database cash. Since I do a fresh save before I quit, it should find where it put them in the first place, shouldn’t it? It should simplify the task, yes? I never have relinking issues by virtue of this practice…am surprised Adobe seems to…still no obvious reason for it to get lost, far as I see.

Media Cache is different than the preview cache files created by rendering the timeline. Those are in the Preview video and Preview audio folder tied to the Project settings. That is what you need to check to see if files are created after you render once.

Weirdness continues … today, all the renders stuck w/o modification. Different project, but same procedure. Maybe Pr needs to “bake” in the background for awhile?? Many times, the best thing is to walk away for awhile…
