  • Disabling Dual Processor Use, Per Application?

    Hello All,

I tried this question on the Apple forums, to no avail.

    Here’s my setup… I am using a brand new (1 wk old) Dual 2Ghz G5 as a dual-purpose server/render client for my render network.

The Cinema 4D NET Server application will consistantly crash when using both processors, but is suddenly stable when I disable the second CPU using Apple’s CHUD tools. According to Maxon, this is a problem with the Server software and OS X’s dual processor threading.

However, I want to be able to use both processors to run the NET Render Client software, because that spells a 50% loss in render speed otherwise.

Running these two applications (Server and Client) simultaneously is paramount.

So, here’s my question: is there a way for me to disable Dual-Processor use only for the Server application, and allow the Client application to go on using both CPUs? Any recommendations? Apple tools? Third Party Tools? Hacks on the Server App?

Again, both applications need to run at the same time, so any solution that disables the second CPU globally (i.e. the CHUD tools, Firmware setup) won’t solve the problem.

Thank you for any help you can offer!

Wild guess, probably wrong… maybe change the Render Threads in the Preferences from Optimal – 1 is obviously not what you are looking for but maybe 2 would be different than Optimal in internal implementation.

    Hi Brian,

    Thanks for the reply.

That setting is in the Cinema 4D program preferences. That is not an option in the Cinema 4D NET Server or Client programs’ preferences, and the machine acting as the server only runs the NET Server and Client programs.
They are totally different and separate programs.

Thanks for the suggestion though… It made me look through all the settings on the server again to make sure I hadn’t missed something like that.

Anyone else care to venture a guess? Any Maxon people know how I can hack the NET Server program to force it to use only one CPU, while leaving both cores available to the NET Client program?

Try starting Cinema4D Server from the command line, with these parameters:

    -server -threads 1

I’m not sure if the threads parameter only affects rendering or program execution as a whole, but it might be worth a shot.
