    Video guys,

I have some footage shot on 24p, some on 29.97DF, and some NDF (all different projects). We don’t have the shooting cameras anymore. I have a FCP system an need to do some digitizing.

I plan to use a extremely basic DV camera (talking about 200 bucks) for digizing, yet I am not sure if this camera which obviously doesn’t support shooting in 24p or DF will transfer that data to FCP (via firewire) when I digitize.

Do I need to invest in a deck or pro DV camera that supports 24p/29.97DF shooting in order to obtain that information in the digitzing process? Or can this information be obtain using a regular DV camera with proper capture settings in FCP 5?

Lastly, HDV – need an HDV camera or Deck to digitize – correct?

    thank you.

Any dv camera (including your 200$ one) can playback 24p footage, because it is recorded as 60i with pulldown.

Those cheap little dv camera only record and play DF timecode. I think you still can digitize your NDF clips, but you may have problems with the timecode.

Correct, you need an HDV camera or deck to playback HDV footage.

    Hope I helped,

Thank you Gustavo. You have helped. It just sounds odd to me that consumer cameras would shoot and play back in DF and not NDF. It seems that drop frame is more complicated. Thank you though.

Yeah I know. But the DV format is by default DF.

    So I guess we’re both online now…

I ask you for a recommendation. I shot 65hrs. of tape (documentary) on a Panasonic DVX100 in NDF. I now want digitize using a cheapo digital camera.

It’s unimportant to me whether the final project ends up in NDF or DF – I just want to avoid TC issues when I online (which is obviously necessary with all the footage I have). Any suggestions? I’m using Avid Xpress Pro or Final Cut 5 – I haven’t yet decided as I own both.

Or do I need to rent a deck for initial digitize and in several months when I online?

    Thank Gustavo,

    Mike.

Playing NDF footage in a DF cheap camera will cause you problems with TC, though it will play the image normally.

Since you’re going online an want to avoid TC issues, I’d rent a deck or a dvx100 to digitize your footage.

The timecode is not inherent with the deck for playing back tapes that are already recorded. The timecode is part of the DV stream regardless of what plays it back. All 24 frame capture from DV cameras are NDF. You can play that tape in any deck or camera and it will still be NDF which is what you want.

The sequence can be DF or NDF based on your preferences and delivery requirements. Now there are decks that cannot record NDF and that’s where you need to be careful if you need NDF output.
