  • Digitizing HDV with another codec?

Posted by Brian Horn on May 30, 2008 at 6:29 pm

    Hey all,

I am working on an HDV project that has been causing us months of trauma. We all have ulcers and no hair left to tear out.

So we decided to take the plunge and recapture our entire 60 hour project in DVCPro HD. So far, things are looking good. But here’s a question…

Using a Sony firewire HDV deck, is it possible to digitize material in a compressor OTHER THAN HDV into FCP6? For instance, can I hook up the deck and select “DVCPRO HD” or even “DV NTSC”?

We started this project on FCP5.1 and only recently upgraded to 6. In 5.1 we were not able to bring in HDV any other way than through fcp’s HDV digitize window. Has 6 made it possible for us to do this?

    Thanks in advance!
    -Brian

***For the record, we have reached a work around for the project, using a Kona 3 and an expensive HDV deck that we had to rent with SDI and 9-pin control. However, I’m wondering about this specific method of capturing HDV material as something else with a firewire deck as we may receive still more tapes and don’t want to rent that expensive version of the deck we already own if we can avoid it.

You can capture HDV to ProRes via firewire. See Chris Poisson’s tutorial at https://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php.

To capture as DVCPRO HD you need an HD capture card. But the ProRes tip is a good one. Just takes up a LOT of space. About 3 times that of DVCPRO HD. And to capture as DV all you need to do is choose that Easy Setup, then set the deck up to output as DV.

The ‘Apple Intermediate Codec’ works great too. Converts as it captures over firewire.

I don’t know the file size difference between it and Pro-Res. Pro-Res is going to look a little better, but do some tests. If AiC is smaller, it might be worth it. I really don’t know if it is. If it isn’t, Pro-Res is a better option. If it is smaller, you’ll have to decide if it’s worth it.

Don’t forget though – with AIC you lose all timecode information…factor this into your decision. Stick with DVCPROHD or the Prores solution posted above.
