I want to digitize footage for archiving and eventually edit on Final Cut but the only computer I have available has only iMovie. How can I capture the footage and still be able to edit in FCP?

    Hi John,
IMovie captures as DV Stream, which must be always rendered in FC.
You can use for capture the QT recorder. Just plug your FW camera and record in the original format.

I thought Qtime compressed video and was a bad idea. Are you saying it’s easier and just as good to use QT recorder? Are you also saying that iMovie is a bad idea for capturing? Thank you.

    Hi Jon,
The QT recorder have a “Device native” option, so no re-compression. You can plug a DV or HDV camera, and download it with full quality.
The problem of iMovie is that uses a proprietary format. DV Stream (.DV). This format doesn’t support Time Code, so no accuracy granted. Also one of the problems of iMovie is that makes a clip for each of your shots. Some times can be a real complication to work with so many files.
    Cheers,
