  • Digitizing DVCpro HD varicam- out of sync

Posted by Ceri Allen on March 24, 2008 at 1:01 pm

    Hi there

I am digitizing some DVCPro HD varicam footage into FCP using the following work flow:

Playback on a panasonic AJHD 1200 deck at system frequency 59.94fps.
Connected via HD SDI to kona card.Input set to 720p59.94.
Using FCP easy setup kona 720p25 DVCPRo HD varicam
    Using FCP 6.0.2

I have various frame rates (25/50 and 60) and this method allows for ones such as 50fps and 60fps to be digitised as nice slow-mo.
However I found that when using this method to digitize the 25fps footage the audio and video were out of sync. It could not be synced up in FCP as the audio would slip over time so it could be in sync at one point and then 20 seconds down the timeline it would be out again.

Does any one knows why this is happening and what I need to change in the workflow to capture the 25fps in sync with the audio?

    thanks

    Ceri

YOu are mixing PAL and NTSC frame rates in one project? I’m a bit lost by your post.

AFAIK, you cannot capture slow motion. You must capture at the full rate, then use the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter to convert the footage to slow motion…or Cinema Tools. And once you convert to slow motion via the FRC, then you will have no audio…as the clip will be slow motion. Cinema Tools conforms the clip and slows down the audio too.

    Hi

    thanks for your quick response.

The shoot is happening using a varicam. The 50fps and 60fps frame rates are simply picked by the camera operator to purely to get a slow mo effect, regardless as whether they are standardly NTSC or PAL frame rates.

Ultimately everything will end up in final cut at 25 fps, hence the edit will be a PAL project.

I am not too worried about the 50fps and 60fps footage as audio is not required for this and I have managed to digitise in slow-mo using the workflow as stated before, though i will also look at using the frame rate converter as you said.

The normal footage (non slow-mo) is also being filmed on a varicam at the standard rate of 25fps. My problem is that when digitizing this it is out of sync with the audio. This is what I really need some advice on, if you have any idea why this is happening?

    many thanks for your help

DO NOT CAPTURE Panny bars and tone – it is the number one issue it has to do with a clocking error in the timebase when it shifts from 1FPS B7T setting to what is acutally recorded on tape.

It is a issue with the way Panny creates bars and how the Kona card is trying to correctly understand what you are asking of it, since it sees your Bars as slomo footage but your content is not.
