  • Digitizing 400 VHS Tapes for Screeners

So I am working on an project which requires lots of archival footage, most of which we have from VHS. We have over 400 VHS tapes and are looking for the quickest, easiest, and cheapest way to digitize them to a compressed screener format for the producers to look over. We’ve tried Dubbing them to DVD, then using MPEG streamclip. We’ve also tried sending them to surveillance recorders, which have several inputs, but those only use proprietary formats.

Here’s what we are ideally looking for – a device that:

    a) Can handle recording several inputs from VCRs at once.

    b) Can digitize without the use of a computer.

    c) Records to a non proprietary format (ideally .mov).

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers,
    Ben

    Hi Ben,

Have you considered Precis from bitcentral? While it’s designed for News work, it will allow you to ingest multiple SDI / Analog sources into the digital format that you specify (and even transcode to others).

We’ve got a couple of high volume folks like yourself (but tapes in the 1,000s) working with it in the archival efforts.
