I was given a tape shot on the DVX 100A, a series of exterior car dealership shots, then some interviews. It was all supposedly shot at 24P. The final product will be web delivery and video tape.

I imported the material three ways, just for fun and to see what looked best in video and on a computer screen:

    29.97
    24P
and 24P Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown removal

The exterior shots (pans, zooms, etc) looked best brought in using the 3rd option, 24P Advanced. In the other settings, the motion stuttered. And it came in at 24 fps using 24P Advanced. It also came in at 24 fps using the 24P setting.

The interior shots looked good in all settings, but when using the 24P Advanced setting, it came in at 29.97. At the 24P setting, it came in at 24.

Is there a reason the exterior shots came in at 24P in both the 24P and 24P Advanced import settings — and why the Advanced setting looked smoother than the 24P setting — and the interior shots came in at 24 fps in 24P importing and 29.97 in 24P Advanced importing?

Thanks for any help here. I find this more than a little confusing.

    Great link Noah…many thanks…
But then this begs the question what are the debatable distinction
between 24P v. 24PA? From your Larry Jordan article y’a might as well shoot
    at 24PA, eh?

    Hello,
I have a quick question you’ve probably heard a million times but I’d be very grateful if you could answer.
I have a new DVX100a and FCP 5.0. Is it correct that if I’m shooting in 24p (regular, not advanced), I can just leave FCP in the standard DV-NTSC mode (in the Easy Setup)? That’s what the FCP manaul seems to say, but I’m not sure.
    Thank you so much.

Yes- stick with the DV NTSC standard DV setup.
